Doc McCoy (Steve McQueen) cumple condena de diez años por asalto a mano armada. Gracias a su esposa Carol (Ali MacGraw), un personaje influyente le consigue la libertad provisional; pero, a cambio, el matrimonio tendrá que atracar a un banco.
