DESCRIPTION

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The complete original album Tonight Only! (Columbia CS8409), the first out of three collaborations between Dave Brubeck and singer Carmen McRae. Five extra songs presenting McRae backed by the Dave Brubeck Trio have been added here as a bonus, including a rare reading of There ll Be No Tomorrow that also appears here on CD for the first time ever. Includes 12-page booklet One of the more obscure Dave Brubeck albums is really a showcase for the young singer Carmen McRae. It presents nine numbers: six composed by the pianist/leader, one song apiece by altoist Paul Desmond and bassist Eugene Wright and the lesserknown standard Paradiddle Joe . McRae is in fine voice. (Scott Yanow, All Music Guide)

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Although he was popular with the public since the beginning of his career in the late 1940s, the enormous success of his 1959 album Time Out allowed Dave Brubeck to get a free check to do whatever project he wanted. Therefore, during the following period between 1959 and 1961 he embarked on such diverse and commercially risky albums as The Riddle (a collaboration with clarinettist Bill Smith consisting of variations on a single tune), Southern Scene (a recreation of popular American southern tunes), Brubeck Plays Bernstein (the first side consisted of a single four-movement piece by his older brother Howard performed by the Brubeck Quartet plus the New York Philharmonic conducted by Leonard Bernstein), Brubeck & Rushing (on which he paired the Quartet with legendary swing singer Jimmy Rushing), Jazz Impressions of Japan (a Quartet feature with Oriental overtones), and Point on Jazz (a ballet composed by Brubeck but performed and recorded by a piano duet Arthur Gold & Robert Fizdale), among others. His renown made it possible for him to include important guest stars on his albums, such as the aforementioned Bernstein and Rushing, and of course, Carmen McRae (1920-1994), who joined him for the first time on Tonight Only! In fact, she only participates on four of the LP s nine numbers. Tristesse is a solo piano number by Brubeck, while Melanctha , Talkin and Walkin , Late Lament and Tonight Only are by the Quartet featuring Paul Desmond. A fifth number with McRae was also recorded on the September 9, 1960 session which produced all of the album s vocal selections: There ll Be No Tomorrow , which was included as the last track on the aforementioned album Point on Jazz, which was otherwise a piano duet. It has been included here after the contents of the original album Tonight Only! all of this material appears here on CD for the first time ever!
