La pesadilla comienza cuando Jack Torrance (Steven Weber) acepta el puesto de vigilante durante el invierno con su mujer y su hijo (Rebbeca de Mornay y Courtland Mead) en el aislado y deshabitado hotel Overlook, que arrastra tras de sí una macabra historia de violencia.
