Motown boss Berry Gordy sought to position the group as America’s musical ambassadors, capitalising on ‘Beatlemania’ and encouraging some friendly transatlantic competition between Detroit and Liverpool. Recorded during a flying visit to Motown’s second ‘Hitsville’ studio in L.A., A Little Bit of Liverpool (known as With Love From Us to You in the UK), features covers of popular songs from the Merseyside scene, including The Dave Clark Five, Mitch Murray, and two originals from Smokey Robinson and Berry Gordy. More importantly, the album contains five covers from The Beatles. Despite missing out on a Top 20 spot in the U.S., peaking at No. 21, The Supremes would rebound, becoming perhaps the most iconic female vocal group of the era.
