The eighth studio album by Marvin Gaye, released by Motown on August 26, 1968. It was the first solo studio album Gaye released in two years, having spent that interim recording duets with Kim Weston and Tammi Terrell. In the Groove was released with moderate reviews. It received more recognition after the unexpected success of the song, which became one of the biggest hits of 1968. As a result, the album shot up to number 2 on the R&B albums chart and peaked at number 63 on the pop albums chart in its best-selling run. In the Groove was retitled I Heard It Through the Grapevine after the song Marvin cut weeks before himself, as ruled by Motown, but “in the groove” remained art and layout legacy, making smooth “Marvin Marc” content.
