Totem was one of the most important mass phenomena in Uruguay's musical history. Formed in 1970 they meant the beginning and rise of the Candombe beat - an afro-Uruguayen rhythm style excisting only in Uruguay and based on three types of drums: "chico", "repique" and "piano" .
