REVIEW
Volume 3 was recorded shortly after what would have been Muddy Waters 79th birthday in 1994, and features George Baze, (who I last saw on tour with Phil Guy and Gloria Thompson Rodgers), leading a band featuring, amongst others, Harmonica Hinds, Bob Hawkes, Roy Hytower, Pistol Pete and John Katke. Baze is a rough and raw vocalist, with a guitar style to match, who, along with Harmonica Hinds, lays down some tough vintage Chicago blues including Rooster . The problems start when John Katke takes over the vocal duties, for as good a pianist as he is, he is no singer, and although the band is excellent, they cannot rescue these performances. Apart from Baze, the highlights of this set are the performances of Roy Hytower and Pistol Pete. Hytower delivers a lowdown, funky rendition of I m Ready that bristles with sexual innuendo; his dark and muscular vocals amplified by Hinds wailing harp and Pistol Pete s feral guitar. Pistol Pete then delivers a wild Honey Bee in vintage Buddy Guy style, also doing a Guy makeover on Yonder s Wall ; making these the best three cuts on the set. --Mick Rainsford
