Leona Cotterell, figlia di un industriale farmaceutico, soffre di una malattia psicosomatica che la costringe a letto. Sola nella sua grande casa, cerca di telefonare al marito Henry Stevenson, l'uomo che per capriccio ha strappato a un'amica, trasformandolo da umile commesso in vicepresidente dell'industria Cotterell. Ma, per un errore del centralino, ascolta invece una conversazione tra due individui che progettano un delitto per quella sera alle undici e un quarto. Ignorata dalla polizia, senza nessuno a cui rivolgersi in città, Leona tenta di ricostruire i movimenti del marito attraverso una serie di chiamate.
