L'ex giocatore di baseball e alcolista cronico Morris Buttermaker (Walter Matthau) viene ingaggiato per allenare la squadra più disastrosa e imbarazzante della Little League, gli Orsi. Le enormi lacune tecnico-tattiche e la pochezza dell'organico emergono immediatamente, destinando la giovanissima compagine a perdere inesorabilmente le prime partite.
