Il film racconta le vicende intrecciate di tre personaggi, racchiuse tra due apparizioni televisive del presidente Johnson occupato a esaltare la "grande società" americana. I tre sono: Jon Rubin, il cui hobby è di fotografare le ragazze che si spogliano davanti ad una finestra, Paul Shaw, che cerca in ogni modo, anche spacciandosi per omosessuale, di evitare l'arruolamento per il Vietnam e intanto si procura donnine ricorrendo ad un computer, e infine Lloyd Clay, che tenta di scoprire la verità sull'assassinio di John Kennedy, poiché non crede alla versione ufficiale della sua morte. Quando arriva troppo vicino alla verità, Lloyd viene a sua volta ucciso come i diciassette testimoni del delitto. Alla fine del film, Jon Rubin, militare in Vietnam, è intervistato da un giornalista della TV, che lo vuol presentare come valoroso patriota, anziché sparare su una vietcong, come il giornalista si aspetterebbe, la fa spogliare davanti alla televisione.
