Karol, parrucchiere polacco a Parigi, è costretto dalla moglie ad accettare il divorzio a causa della sua impotenza. Tornato clandestinamente in Polonia con l`aiuto di un compatriota occasionalmente conosciuto, si insinua gradualmente nel giro degli speculatori e si arricchisce.
