Risvegliatosi da una sbronza, Alex - un marinaio in libera uscita - si ritrova fra le mani una grossa somma di denaro appartenente alla disinibita Edna, che lo aveva invitato a casa. Perplesso, Alex decide di restituire i soldi e torna dalla ragazza insieme all'amica June: ma nel frattempo Edna è stata uccisa, e i due hanno solo quattro ore a disposizione (prima cioè che la nave di Alex riparta) per rintracciare il killer. Ma nel cuore della notte si fanno strani incontri, e gli indizi si confondono.
