Ossessionato da un sogno che lo turba Doe Doakes consulta il suo amico Davies. Questi gli legge tre racconti strani: il primo è quello di una ragazza che volendo conquistare un uomo si reca mascherata ad un ballo. La maschera miracolosamente l'ha resa affascinante. Il secondo si riferisce ad un uomo di carattere che tuttavia diviene assassino perché gli si predice che lo diventerà. Il terzo racconto narra di un acrobata il quale ha sognato che perderà la vita il giorno che una donna griderà durante il suo spettacolo. Egli incontra la donna e non ha più coraggio di fare il suo numero. Poco a poco riprende la sua padronanza, ma sogna di nuovo che la donna è una ladra di gioielli e il sogno si realizza. Tuttavia gli si unisce a lei.
