La notte di San Silvestro piove a dirotto in una cittadina francese. Mentre tutti si apprestano a festeggiare il nuovo anno, l'ispettore Antoine Gallien e il suo aiutante Belmont trascorrono la notte ad interrogare il notaio Jerome Martinaud, testimone del ritrovamento di due bambine violentate e assassinate. Mentre Gallien è sottile, analitico, insinua dubbi e sospetti, Martinaud, all'inizio sicuro e brillante, poco a poco comincia a divenire insicuro.
