Da qualche giorno Roma è teatro di un evento singolare: quando piove condotti e tombini tracimano con una melma grigiastra ed esalano un vapore misterioso. Nessuno può immaginare che chiunque respiri questo vapore dovrà farà i conti con ciò che reprime, i suoi istinti più oscuri. Neanche la famiglia Morel. Dalla morte di Cristina, causata da un incidente un anno fa, per il marito Thomas e il figlio Enrico, l'amore ha ceduto il posto a una convivenza forzata.
