A rare and little-known session by Argentiniansaxophonist Gato Barbieri playing standards asopposed to his widely known work within Latinand free form jazz.This release fills a gap in Barbieris discography.The artist we met in his first work as a singleleader, In Search Of The Mystery (1967), movedin the realm of pure improvisation, going inthe direction of the spirituality of Albert Aylerand Pharoah Sanders. In the Roman sessions,however, Barbieri recovers his original matrixdeeply rooted in the language of John Coltraneand, in part, in that of the early OrnetteColeman. To some extent it is a completely newBarbieri that emerges from these recordings.
