Girato interamente nelle valli occitane del Piemonte, un ex professore decide di trasferirsi con tutta la sua famiglia - una moglie e tre figli - in un paesino di poche anime, sulle montagne, per poter vivere secondo natura. Nella diffidenza generale, Philippe e sua moglie vivono di pastorizia, cercando di raggiungere quel difficile equilibrio con le cose del mondo e con gli anziani abitanti del posto.
