In Inghilterra, nel 1923, due uomini ricordano il caso Dreyfus, l'ufficiale dei servizi segreti francesi che ventotto anni prima fu accusato di spionaggio a favore dei tedeschi e, per questo, degradato e portato sull'Isola del Diavolo dove fu costretto a vivere per molti anni fino a quando il colonnello Picquart non venne incaricato di portare avanti una nuova indagine volta a fare chiarezza e a portare a galla tutta la verità. Dreyfus era ebreo. Un capro espiatorio ideale per coprire e proteggere l'onore di un altro ufficiale dei Servizi Segreti e dell'esercito.
