1945. Alla vigilia del Natale, su un treno che percorre il tragitto Stoccolma-Berlino senza sosta, le vicende di un eterogeneo gruppo di passeggeri s'intrecciano. Fra tutti spicca la personalità di un critico letterario con in testa l'idea di riportare alla luce lo spirito della vecchia Europa. Tra gli altri passeggeri, inoltre, un dottore con a seguito sia la moglie sia l'amante, una suora, un militare svedese col dono dell'ottimismo, un macchinista sempre e comunque arrabbiato. Non tutti i passeggeri del treno arriveranno vivi a destinazione.
