Il detective Philip Marlowe si reca a Pasadena, non lontano da Los Angeles. La ricca signora Murdock vuole che scopra chi le ha rubato una rara e preziosa moneta, il doblone di Brasher che dà il titolo al film. Nella grande e inquietante villa di Pasadena il detective privato fa anche conoscenza con il figlio della signora, il giovane e arrogante Leslie, che vorrebbe allontanare Marlowe, e la segretaria della signora Murdock, Merle Davis. Quest'ultima avverte Marlowe della "stravaganza" della sua padrona. È un po' eccentrica, dice, ma è per quello che ha sofferto in passato. In effetti Mrs. Murdock si dimostra un po' rude con il detective, che in un primo momento vuole rifiutare il caso.
