In un piccolo paese arroccato sulle montagne calabresi, vive Rocco Ventura, un uomo sulla cinquantina che conduce un'esistenza solitaria, insieme al suo gregge di capre. Rocco produce un antico formaggio calabro che fa stagionare nelle grotte del paese secondo un antico metodo tramandato dalla sua famiglia. Ma su di lui e sui suoi terreni incombono le mire di Spadafora, il sindaco del paese, che insieme a Bortolotti, un avido imprenditore, ha in progetto di costruire sui monti un grande ed ambizioso complesso turistico.
