La marchesina Eugenia, sul punto di consumare il matrimonio con Raimondo, riceve una lettera dal padre. Egli le rivela che il neomarito è in realtà suo fratellastro. I due decidono di vivere come fratello e sorella: lei si dedica alle opere pie, lui alle letture dei testi di Gabriele D'Annunzio. Arruolatosi nell'esercito, Raimondo muore in Libia, mentre Eugenia si consola fin troppo presto tra le braccia dell'autista Silvano.
