Nel 1619 Giovanni Andreini è il capocomico di una fortunata compagnia teatrale del ducato di Mantova che viene chiamata dal re di Francia per recitare all'Hotel de Bourgogne. Sua moglie Virginia da qualche tempo è gelosa di Lidia, la nuova attrice che ha conquistato il favore di Giovanni. La nuova commedia che Andreini sta componendo ha per argomento proprio le vicende che lo stanno turbando, i suoi desideri piú nascosti e difficili da rivelare. Sarà proprio la messa in scena di quest'opera che farà nascere tra Lidia e Virginia un'intensa complicità.
