Alex Manning, a troubled suburban teen who has yet to get over his mother's suicide, travels with his friends to the local arcade known as "Dante's Inferno," where the CEO of a computer company distributes free samples of a new virtual reality arcade game called Arcade. Soon, all the teenagers who play and lose remain imprisoned in the virtual reality world by the central villain, Arcade, who was once a normal kid whose brain cells were used by Vertigo/Tronics to make the game's villain more realistic. Nick and Alex ask for the help of the game programmer and head to the arcade for the final showdown with Arcade. Alex manages to free her friends from virtual prison and also manages to free the evil boy, who mocks her in the last scenes of the film.
