EDITORIAL REVIEWS
Digitmovies releases for the very first time on CD the complete OST in mono by Fiorenzo Carpi for the movie "Un'Anguilla da 300 milioni" (aka "Million Dollar Eel") directed in 1971 by Salvatore Samperi, with the scenario written by Samperi himself with Aldo Lado and starring Ottavia Piccolo, Lino Toffolo, Rodolfo Baldini, Mario Adorf, Senta Berger, Gabriele Ferzetti, Ricky Gianco. Bissa (Toffolo) is a former partisan who lives as an illegal fisherman in the valley of Caorle. One day Vasco (Ferzetti), who was his superior during the resistance, unexpectedly visits him. The man asks him to take care of his daughter Tina (Piccolo), who is searching for seclusion and relax after coming off drugs. With the help of Lino (Baldini), another young illegal fisherman, Bissa agrees to attend the girl by giving hospitality to her in a cane shed at the river. Some time later the tragic news arrives that the girl's father was killed in a car accident, but in reality the man was not the parent, but the kidnapper. The girl, an angel outside, but a devil inside, persuades the two men to ask for a ransom of three hundred millions of liras to set her free so that together they can escape to America and live a rich life. Fate is sometimes cruel and the girl kills the two men by taking possession of the whole sum. The girl's diabolical plan is foiled by a smart fishing guard (Adorf), who knocks down the girl and steals the loot. This CD project (66:57) is possible thanks to Martina Carpi, the daughter of the composer, who till today has preserved the mono master tapes of the original session arranged and conducted by Bruno Nicolai, and to the friends at Beat Records who have licensed US this film music rarity. For this plot which is half comedy and half Giallo, Fiorenzo Carpi has written a very varied score based on the folk song "Anguille e libertà" (Tr.1, Tr.26) which is reprised in instrumental version in Tr.5, Tr.7, Tr.9, Tr.16, Tr.22. This nostalgic theme with a popular flavour (typical of the composer) is alternated with suspense music with dissonant passages which renders the adequate "Giallo" colour of the story in Tr.6, Tr.11, Tr.12, Tr.13, Tr.14, Tr.15, Tr.20, Tr.23, Tr.24, little marches (Tr.8, Tr.17), themes for liturgical organ (Tr.10, Tr.18) and Beat music (Tr.2, Tr.3, Tr.19, Tr.25). a proper rescue and preservation of a rare OST by the unforgettable Fiorenzo Carpi and Bruno Nicolai.
