Scozia, 1306. La morte di re alessandro iii, senza un successore, ha lasciato la nazione in tumulto e tutti i nobili casati bramano la corona scozzese. Robert the bruce (angus macfadyen), dopo aver combattuto con william wallace (interpretato da mel gibson in braveheart), crede ancora nell'indipendenza scozzese. Si incorona re e fa sua la causa della libertà della scozia. Ma non può vincere contro la potente inghilterra.
