durante un'escursione in africa, sir edward markham rimane vittima di una stregoneria, assume un aspetto mostruoso ed e' costretto a nascondere il proprio volto. tornato in inghilterra viene segregato dal fratello in un tetro castello. ritenuto morto viene sepolto erroneamente e poi salvato in extremis da un medico che trafuga i cadaveri per i propri esperimenti. edward nasconde il volto dietro una maschera rossa dando inizio alla propria vendetta nei confronti dei responsabili della sua sepoltura. diventa cosi' un feroce assassino e dovra' affrontare anche il proprio fratello per un epilogo terrificante
