Il giovane pistolero Nessuno (Terence Hill), tanto abile all’inganno quanto all’uso della pistola, incontra il suo idolo di sempre, il vecchio cacciatore di taglie Jack Beauregard (Henry Fonda). Jack è ormai anziano, stanco, desideroso di lasciare il West per imbarcarsi in Europa. Quando Nessuno scopre la triste verità, decide di non far partire il suo eroe prima di avergli fatto compiere un’ultima, folle impresa che li farebbe “entrare nella storia”: sterminare la banda più temuta di tutta l’Unione, i centocinquanta briganti del “Mucchio selvaggio”. I due vincono ma Nessuno, desideroso di gloria, ingaggerà un bizzarro duello finale con Jack il quale, pur di poter partire, si fingerà morto.
