Il medico scozzese Nicholas Garrigan vola in Uganda in cerca di avventura ed emozioni. Qui incontra per caso il dittatore Idi Amin che prova un'immediata simpatia per Garrigan e, dopo poco, gli offre l'inverosimile compito di diventare il suo medico personale.
