Michel, un bandito marsigliese, corre verso Parigi alla guida di un'auto rubata. Inseguito dalla polizia per una banale infrazione, uccide un agente ed entra in città. Lì incontra Patricia, una studentessa americana che vuol diventare giornalista. Dopo una breve e tormentata storia d'amore la ragazza denuncia Michel che, colpito alle spalle, cade sulle strisce pedonali di un incrocio. Con questa opera prima, Jean-Luc Godard firma il film-manifesto della Nouvelle Vague.
