Nell'Inghilterra vittoriana, il Dottor Frederick Treves durante uno spettacolo vede per la prima volta John Merrick, utilizzato come fenomeno da baraccone dello show. John attira il pubblico per le sue numerose deformazioni in gran parte del corpo, tanto da essere soprannominato The Elephant Man.
