Sin dal momento in cui riesce a vedere la sua attrice preferita uscire da teatro, Eve Harrington lotta instancabilmente per raggiungere il suo obiettivo: rubare la scena alla grande attrice Margo Channing. Con astuzia Eve si fa strada e porta via a Margo il suo ruolo più famoso, diventa celebre e provoca scompiglio nella vita del suo fidanzato regista, in quella del suo commediografo e di sua moglie.
