Michael Dorsey e' un attore scrupoloso, intelligente e di gran talento ma dal carattere intransigente e quindi non riesce a trovare lavoro. Dopo esser passato attraverso i piu' svariati mestieri, decide che deve essere scritturato e, a tal fine, si traveste da donna per avere una parte in televisione. In men che non si dica Michael-Dorothy diventa una star del video e s'innamora di una collega, ma solo al termine di infinite traversie riesce a rivelarle i propri sentimenti.
