Frederick Frankenstein, un noto e stimato neurochirurgo che vive e insegna in un'università americana, riceve per vie misteriose l'invito a recarsi in Transilvania, nel castello che fu del famoso nonno, al fine di entrare in possesso di alcuni lasciti testamentari. Qui Frederick scopre il fatidico manuale di istruzioni per ridare la vita ai morti e con l'aiuto del gobbo Igor e della sensuale Inga crea un mostro che, pur terrorizzando gli abitanti del luogo, in realtà non è cattivo e vuole solo essere amato.
