durante la rapina alla banca di plainview, texas, una banda di fuorilegge uccidono il banchiere ed il vechcio sceriffo della citta'. un pacifico bottegaio dell'emporio raccoglie la pistola dello sceriffo e da 70 yarde spara in direzione dei fuorilegge in fuga e per incredibile fortuna ferisce a morte il fratello del loro capo. per qualche giorno diventera' l'eroe locale, ma poi tutti lo scanseranno per timore della vendetta del capobanda che non tardera' ad arrivare. l'atmosfera e' in linea con mezzogiorno di fuoco, ma il finale riserva una sorpresa inaspettata
