Springfield, California: i coniugi Reston sono invischiati in un caso d’omicidio. Contattano così il famoso avvocato James Gordon Blane, principe del foro newyorkese che non ha mai perso una causa, cui affidano la loro difesa. Anche in questo caso, nonostante l’evidente colpevolezza, Blane riesce miracolosamente a far assolvere la coppia di imputati. Le autorità cittadine, però, decidono di vendicarsi e portano Blane in tribunale con l’accusa di aver corrotto un testimone. Una nuova sfida attende adesso il celebre avvocato: difendere se stesso.
