Un giovane chirurgo, il dottor Johnson, ha raggiunto una certa notorietà e vive felicecon Penny, la donna che ha sposato. Quando l’America entra in guerra, Johnson si arruola e viene mandato in Africa. Là conosce Jane, una giovane infermiera molto determinata che ha da poco perso il marito. I rapporti tra i due non sono idilliaci ma a poco a poco tra loro scoppia una grande passione. La guerra però li divide e per tre anni Johnson non riesce a vedere Jane: quando la rincontra, l’infermiera, ferita in un bombardamento, è moribonda.Tornato in patria, Johnson racconta a sua moglie la verità.
