Uno dei più celebrati film “on the road”. Il Meccanico e il Pilota, a bordo della loro Chevrolet truccata del 1955, percorrono le highways del sud ovest degli Stati Uniti con l’unico scopo di partecipare a gare clandestine. Un giorno incontrano Gto, soprannominato così perché guida una Ferrari Gto, e lo sfidano ad arrivare a Washington mettendo in palio la loro Chevrolet. Alla fine Gto se ne andrà con la ragazza che per un po’ di tempo si era accodata al Meccanico e al Pilota.
