Agnieszka, giovane polacca laureanda in cinema, decide di girare un documentario su Birkut, eroe del lavoro ai tempi di Stalin e di cui non si è più saputo niente dopo la memorabile impresa che aveva compiuto: con la sua squadra aveva piazzato 30.509 mattoni mentre costruivano un palazzo. A poco a poco Agnieszka scopre che il caso era stato gonfiato a fini di propaganda, che Birkut successivamente era stato emarginato ed era morto da oppositore al regime.
