Christian, un giovane soldato tedesco, è un convinto assertore delle teorie naziste, ma la scoperta dei campi di concentramento provoca in lui una grave crisi esistenziale; finirà ucciso da due soldati americani. Il film doveva essere la trasposizione cinematografica dell’omonimo romanzo di Irwin Shaw, ma Brando diede del personaggio di Christian un’interpretazione più approfondita; nel libro, infatti, il protagonista è fedele fino all’ultimo all’ideologia hitleriana.
