Chiamato alle armi, Ferdinand Waldo Demara falsifica le proprie credenziali per poter frequentare la scuola sottoufficiali. Quando, però, si accorge che il trucco sta per essere scoperto si finge morto in un incidente stradale e si rifugia in un monastero. Ben presto si accorge di non essere adatto alla vita monastica e torna alla vita borghese ma viene subito scoperto e arrestato. Ferdinand però non si perde d’animo e ottiene un impiego nel penitenziario.
