Il piccolo David è maltrattato dal secondo marito della madre. Quando la donna muore, manda il bambino a lavorare in una fabbrica di vini. Qui David conosce un barbone che diviene il suo migliore amico. La fabbrica fallisce e David viene derubato di tutto ciò che possiede per cui, stanco e affamato raggiunge una vecchia zia. La donna, lo accoglie e si affeziona all’orfano e inizia a crescerlo ed istruirlo a sua spese, fronteggiando il patrigno che lo rivorrebbe indietro.
