John Wayne è la guida che porterà una carovana di pionieri verso terre da colonizzare, su nell’Oregon e nelle terre del nord. Il film, del 1930, è uno dei primi modelli del genere, con tutti i codici tradizionali: indiani, natura impervia, inimicizie interne, sentimenti che nascono. Wayne aveva 23 anni ma dava già segnali dell’eroe della frontiera che sarebbe diventato da Ombre rosse. Il regista Walsh ha firmato titoli importanti del genere, spesso con Errol Flynn. Il Tyrone Power nel cast non è quello che tutti conosciamo, è il padre.
