Antonio Mendoza, un tempo celebre torero, è padre di due gemelli, José e Maria, vorrebbe che il maschio seguisse le sue orme professionali. Ma il giovanotto non vuole saperne: ama la musica e il giorno in cui dovrebbe debuttare, abbandona l'arena durante la corrida. La sorella gemella di Mario, Maria, per riportare la pace in famiglia, si sostituisce al fratello e aiutata da un servitore, in abiti maschili e col nome del fratello, partecipa ad alcune corride con successo.
