Estate del ’44, San Martino è un piccolo paese è nel pieno della guerra di Resistenza. I nazisti hanno ordinato alla popolazione di radunarsi all’interno del Duomo, visto che gli Alleati sembrano essere sempre più vicini. Un gruppo però, temendo una trappola, decide di fuggire con il favore della notte per cercare di andare incontro agli americani. Scampata la strage, effettivamente compiuta dai nazisti, il gruppo viene in seguito attaccato da alcuni fascisti.
