Josie feels trapped by her Sicilian family heritage, particularly as represented by her strict grandmother, who has never forgiven Christina for having a baby out of wedlock. Christina is nervous about the fact that a former neighbour, Michael, now a successful lawyer, is returning to Sydney, since only Christina knows that Michael is in fact Josie's father. Josie has her own problems at school to contend with, not least the fact that although she has won a scholarship to a private school, at least one of the students has taken an instant dislike to her due to her background.
