la chiromante astra viene trovata strangolata. la polizia inizia le indagini. le deposizioni tracciano un ritratto assai poco rassicurante della vittima. quasi tutti quelli che la conoscevano la descrivono come una donna avida e sensuale, incurante degli altri e disonesta. ognuno di quelli che le gravitavano attorno puo' essere l'assassino: la sorella catherine, che astra ricattava; bob, il fidanzato di catherine, murray, un marinaio innamorato perdutamente della chiromante che lo ingannava; e infine pallard, un maturo negoziante che aveva prestato piu' volte alla donna grosse somme di denaro. la matassa sembra sempre piu' intricata, ma l'ispettore butler riesce a far confessare il colpevole.
