Una donna viene ritrovata morta nel suo appartamento. E' nuda, il suo corpo è stato martoriato ma ha il viso perfettamente truccato e i capelli pettinati con cura. Era dirigente di una società di computer.Sul caso deve investigare il detective Catherine Palmer, una donna sola che lavora in un ambiente ostile. Interrogando Vickie, un'amica e collega della vittima, Palmer scopre l'esistenza di un gruppo di donne, bisessuali e lesbiche, che conducono una doppia vita dalla quale si sente attratta, ed incontra uno psicanalista di successo, Broussard, anche lui in qualche modo legato alle vittime. Quando viene compiuto un terzo assassinio con le stesse caratteristiche Palmer si introduce sempre più a fondo in quell'oscuro mondo di passione e dolore.
