Il film ripercorre la storia del filosofo greco vissuto tra V e IV secolo a.C. Il suo pensiero rivoluzionario gli provocò l'ostilità di Atene che lo condannò a morte costringendolo al suicidio. Il suo insegnamento è stato quello di sostenere che in effetti non vi sono maestri, che ogni insegnamento, ogni dottrina vanno sottoposti a critica. Non vanno accettati ma discussi ed è proprio attraverso questa critica e questa ricerca che ciascuno costruisce se stesso.
