Nella Berlino del dopoguerra, sconfitta e devastata, si aggira un ragazzino, il tredicenne Edmund, che deve provvedere da solo a sfamare la sua famiglia e a prendersi cura del vecchio padre ammalato. Suo fratello è fuggito dall'esercito e adesso deve nascondersi, mentre la sorella la sera frequenta gli ambienti militari alleati. Preo dallo sconforto, chiede aiuto ad un suo vecchio maestro, che lo convince che i deboli debono essere eliminati, per lasciare il posto ai più forti, i soli in grado di andare avanti.
